When Using Prompts, What Sequence of Prompts Should One Use?
Artificial intelligence (AI) can do a lot, but it is not always clear how to make the AI do what you need. This is especially true for complex, multi-layered projects. Some tasks are impossible to explain in just one prompt, so you may need to rely on a few to get the desired outcome. But when using prompts, what sequence of prompts should one use?
Steps for Prompt-Writing and Sequencing
Step 1: Introduction and Basic Instructions
Start with a clear and concise introductory prompt that provides context for follow-up prompts. Doing so will help ensure that the AI understands the overall objective as you progress through the sequence of prompts. You might start with "Write an article about [topic] that's 1,000 words long."
Step 2: Supplementary Information and Details
Once you have submitted an introductory prompt and detailed the task, you'll often find that the AI could use more information that you didn't consider. Feed it any details that it needs to complete the task. For instance, you might follow a writing prompt with "Include [point 1], [point 2], and [point 3] in the article."
Step 3: Clarifying Questions
If your task is complicated or lengthy, you can next request that the AI provide clarification or more specific details on specific areas of its response. For a piece of writing, you might ask it to expand on a certain topic or section. If you're satisfied with the results so far but the AI stops before the text is complete, prompt it with "continue" to make it keep writing.
Step 4: Iteration and Refinement
If you're still unsatisfied with the result, use subsequent prompts to fix it. You can request that the AI fix a specific section, expand on a certain area, or redo the project entirely. Repeat this process until you have the desired result.
